One of Martyn V. Halm’s many gifts as a writer is his ability to get inside the mind and heart of a protagonist who ought to be unsympathetic and to make the character’s experience so compelling that the reader roots for him. Wolfgang, narrator of this suspenseful tale, is professional pickpocket. H...

This long short story or short novella is one of the four of its kind that make up the Amsterdam Assassin Series along with three full-length novels. (I’m glad to know that a fourth is on the way.) One of the many things I like about this series is that Halm’s style is so unique and his characters s...

Freelance assassin Katla takes on a “corporate troubleshooting” job with an elaborate and devious plan requiring her to use her skills in everything from automotive repair (and its opposite) to interpersonal manipulation, as she tricks other people into helping her succeed. This story is suspenseful...

This is a tight little puzzle of a story, every step precisely described so that the reader feels what it’s like to be Katla, the free-lance assassin, completing a job. Halm has the remarkable ability to engage the reader. His research is thorough. This is an unusual story, and more disturbing than ...

As a confirmed fan of this series, I found it fascinating to go back to freelance assassin Katla’s early career, and see her developing her homicidal enterprise. It’s oddly true to life somehow that she’s more nervous about her sales pitch for it than she is about actually doing the work. In this lo...

This is an addictive series. I think a reader would do well to start his or her habit with the first book, Reprobate. With some series , you can jump in at any point and it doesn’t matter, but with this one, the author has made a good choice not to slow down a thriller with backstory. You could foll...

I suspect we all have occasional desires to break laws and not get caught, not even by our consciences. Katla, the protagonist of Reprobate, gets away with murder—without regret. Meet your Shadow. Halm has created a complex, realistic, and compelling character. While she isn’t likeabl...

There's something satisfying about watching an exceedingly competent professional at work. With these Katla KillFile shorts, I get the same gee-whiz feeling I get when watching a documentary showing master craftsmen building things, anything. This was a good read, but I liked "Locked Room" more. Th...
