Mary Heebner is a multi-media visual artist. Her painting, photography and handmade artists books are internationally exhibited. A version of her fine press limited edition book, On the Blue Shore of Silence: Poems of the Sea by Pablo Neruda (simplemente maria press 2000), on handmade paper with original paintings and English translations by Alastair Reid, was published in 2004 by Rayo/Harper Collins. A companion collection of poetry, Intimacies: Poems of Love by Pablo Neruda was published by Harper in 2008. Heebner's most recent fine press book, The Tragic History of Hamlet: An artist's interpretation of the classic text by William Shakespeare, combines her paintings, various forms of handmade paper, and letterpress in an edition of twenty copies (simplemente maria press, 2008)Of Intimacies, Washington Post book reviewer Marie Arana writes: "As unlikely as it may seem, this is a book in which the vibrant poems of the great Chilean poet Neruda illuminate the art of Mary Heebner, not the other way around.Heebner's nudes, rendered on handmade paper in watercolor washes and graphite are at once grounded and fragile. Like Neruda's poetry, they relay what Heebner calls the "naked, exposed, vulnerable" aspects of love."
