In retrospect, first books often seem like first casualties. In the case of Patricia Briggs' 1993 Masques, her own worst doubts about confirmed by its poor sales. Fortunately, Briggs continued to develop as a writer and as a plot-maker. Eventually, she decided to rescue the exciting romantic sorcerer fiction struggling to get out of its husk. This revised, smoothed version, which appears in a mass-market original, will please fans old and new. (P.S. Masques is the launch volume of a shiny new fantasy series.)

As Mrs Briggs first work I recognize that, as she herself says, the work is unpolished. Her storytelling though was absolutely wonderful. I prefer when Briggs writes Fantasy. Hopefully I'll be able to find the next book in the series without having to pay a fortune. Off to my next read...Cheers Pret...

Disclaimer: I read (listened to) the updated 2010 version which had been re-written and fleshed out considerably (according to the author's introduction), and was almost twice the length of the original 1993 release.I really struggled to rate this one.
