It’s hard to read such an honest book full of uncomfortable truths. The author picks up where Caged Bird left off, telling her story from ages 17-19. It’s a story of beginnings and endings as she struggles to define herself as a person and find her way as an adult in a harsh world, as her family dis...

Finding out more about this author's life is always interesting. She tells about the good and the bad and how she felt, and she always seems to keep a good outlook on life. It helps me to get over some of the petty things in my own life.

If you're interested in Maya Angelou's life this is a good book to read. It tells a lot about her life in relation to her mother. They had a trouble relationship at times and a wonderful one at others.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is the first of seven memoirs that Maya Angelou wrote. This book tells of her life from childhood to the age of seventeen - the years 1928 to 1945. The story is a harsh and sad one, dealing with poverty, racism, abandonment, rape, sexual abuse, and teenage pregnancy. ...

I really can't imagine that I would have cared much for the art of Basquiat if the editor hadn't done such a fabulous job of pairing the words with the pictures. The result feels like a close collaboration, rather than an after-the-fact pairing. Nice back matter, for those who care, too.And a shout-...

I rarely read poetry because I have difficulty connecting with it. But this collection, on audio, is performed by the author herself, and hearing it in her own voice is profoundly moving. It gave me the opportunity to experience some of her less widely known work. Some of my favorites: Sounds Like ...

I enjoyed this more than Angelou's first memoir, which won't be a surprise to anyone who knows my tastes, because in this book she's a teenager/young adult while in the first she was a child. Adults make for active protagonists, while children are passive. So I enjoyed the content more and therefore...

This is a phenomenal collection of poetry. Insightful, enlightening, humorous, heartbreaking, lyrical, amazing. The range of topics and style makes each poem feel unique. I really loved the flow and rhythm of the poems. Some of my favorites were "Phenomenal Woman", "Willie", "One More Round", "Still...

I am really not much of a poetry lover but I didn't hesitate to grab this short sampler of poems by Maya Angelou when it was offered as a freebie on audible. I enjoyed the poems and loved the author's narration. I don't know that I would have enjoyed anything longer than this short piece because a...

Vivian Baxter, Maya’s mother, is really quite interesting. She’s a woman who doesn’t accept the word can’t. There is almost nothing that can not be accomplished if you put your mind to it. It’s really very inspiring. She had her faults as every person does but she tried to make up for them. She live...
