This edition of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure reprints the Bevington edition of the play accompanied by four sets of thematically arranged primary documents and illustrations designed to facilitate many different approaches to Shakespeare’s play and the early modern culture out of which the play emerges. The texts include royal proclamations, speeches, court records, sermons, biographical writings, prayers, ballads, poetry, excerpts from plays and the Bible, and drawings, woodcuts, and engravings. These documents contextualize the role of rulers and government in Jacobean society, crime and punishment in London’s underworld, the religious and secular laws that regulated marriage and sexuality, Catholic and Puritan morality, and the religious and cultural significance of chastity and virginity in Shakespeare’s time. Editorial features designed to help students read the play in light of the historical documents include an intelligent and engaging general introduction, introductions to each thematic group of documents, thorough headnotes and glosses for the primary documents (presented in modern spelling), and an extensive bibliography.

4.0 A Tale of Forgiveness
When I was recently in London I picked up a box set at The Globe containing a collection of plays that they had filmed and kindly decided to release. As such when I sat down on the train and began reading this play I half expected to be able to then go and watch it at a later date. As it turned out ...

4.0 Measure for Measure: Shakespeare's Experimental Comedy
The more I read of Shakespeare the more I think that the best way to think of him is as an experimental author and Measure for Measure is one of his more experimental plays. It is based on what was essentially a contemporary urban myth of a man who has been sentenced to die for having sex outside o...

3.0 Measure for Measure
Measure for Measure is a play about lust in the sense that Claudio has been sleeping with a woman, Juliet even though they are not married. Is it love or is it lust. In my mind this is really love turned into lust because they had been married, but could not acknowledge it because of some problem w...

2.0 Measure for Measure (Review)
Measure for Measure was perhaps my least favorite Shakespeare play I read in my class a couple semesters back. I sometimes have difficulty grasping the concept of Shakespeare’s “comedies,” because I am used to comedies being funny instead of simply having everyone get married to different people at ...

3.0 Measure for Measure by William Shakespeare
Note: The review below was taken directly from my Goodreads account. Measure for Measure is a weird Shakespeare play: there's too much mixing of comedy and serious subject matter that it's hard to pin down exactly what kind of play it is. (No wonder it's called a "problem" play.) It's definitely a...
