I got this mainly for the illustrations - which are worth it - but the text strikes me as probably useful to beginners wishing to learn, if not exactly the bible of technique. On the other hand, I gave up sketching in my teens and I think I'll carry on taking photographs, instead...

I consider it pointless to compare Tolkien and Peake; you might as well argue whether Raymond Chandler is better than Ivy Compton-Burnett. I would only point out, since I believe no one has so far, that in Gormenghast, unlike Middle Earth, Sex exists. I also think Peake fits into the Gothic traditio...

Very brief and, frustratingly, contains all you really need to learn and improve. Don't believe me though - go off and suffer instead.

Tough going in places. I found myself skipping through some bits and rereading others. It's taken nearly a month - the longest time I've stuck with a book for ages. The story line is convoluted, with intrigue, rivalry and politics - like life then. I you stick with it then a good read. Having said th...

Titus Groan is considered by many to be a masterpiece of the literature of the fantastic. I don't think that I can argue with that assessment. However, I can say that it's a masterpiece that I certainly wasn't pleased to be reading for much of the time I was doing so. The primary reason for this was...
