Niczym zraniony pies chwytał powietrze gwałtownymi płytkimi łykami. Jak przez watę słyszał, że Royal pyta go, co się stało. Wrzucił pierwszy bieg i ciężarówka z potwornym rykiem silnika ruszyła z miejsca, omijając narożnik domu na dwóch kołach i wzbijając w powietrze fontanny ziemi. Zwolnił dopiero wtedy, gdy znaleźli się na Brooks Road i niemal w tej samej chwili jego ciałem zaczęły wstrząsać tak gwałtowne dreszcze, iż bal się, że lada chwila straci panowanie nad kierownicą.
