This collection was a mixed bag. I liked about half the stories in it well enough to go out and buy more by the same authors but the other half I could have done without. It's a nice idea, and a good sampler of fantasy writers, but not a great anthology. "Cold Spell" by Donna Andrews is a comic co...

A rather weak anthology of short stories combining murder mystery and fantasy. The best story was the first one, Cold Spell by Donna Andrews. Andrews is a competent mystery writer, so the quality of her story came as no surprise. But the mediocrity of the other stories, despite some stellar authors’...

1 of the stories was entertaining, but the rest were blah. Sometimes these short story books help me find a new author that I'll fall in love with, but this one wasn't the case. Donna Andrews was okay, but I've already read a lot of her stuff already. Besides that they were boring and I had to force...

I found this one at the used bookstore and snapped it up. This collection is a good way to get introduced to the occult detective sub-genre of urban fantasy. It has a nice mix of stories, including a Simon R. Green Nightside story and a Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse story, which actually encou...

Review on a story by story basis. More at my blog: There's Nothing Wrong with AnythingLucky- Charlaine Harris It's a story set in the world of Sookie and it seems to take place right before the most recent book. Anyhoo, there is an absence of Eric which sort of made me go "aw man" but there is a Bil...

It was a decent anthology about magical mysteries. I enjoyed [author:Simon R. Green]'s back story for Larry Oblivion of his Nightside series, as well as [author: Anne Bishop]'s story set in her Blood Jewels universe. The story about the magician with a cold was well done and the solution memorable.

I picked this edition only because it has the cover art. I have it in hardback (same cover), but for some reason GoodReads' record for the HB lacks the art. Anyways, I read this back in 2000. A very intriguing anthology. Here is what I wrote in my journal back then: >>The book is a collection of sho...

This was a fun, if somewhat uneven anthology. There was only one story I gave up on, and several I enjoyed a lot.
