Michael Cox was the biographer of the ghost-story writer and scholar M.R. James, and the editor of several anthologies of (chiefly: Victorian) short stories. His first novel, The Meaning of Night, was shortlisted for the 2007 Costa First Novel Award. A native of Northamptonshire, Cox died of cancer in 2009, after having completed two books of what he intended to be a trilogy of novels set in the Victorian era.
