I come from Abbotsley, a village in Huntingdonshire. I went to the village school there, and then to Kimbolton School, in the same county (now Cambridgeshire). I did my National Service in the Royal Navy and went on to London University and, later, to the University of Leeds. I spent a number of years working abroad, in the Netherlands, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand. After many years with the Bell Educational Trust, I became a freelance writer in 1993.
