Biography ofMICHAEL MENZIESAuthor of DEEPLY SUPERFICIAL.A second generation New Zealander, Michael couldn't wait to get out of thecountry and begin a life devoted to the arts - at that time an option closed tohim. Now, he can't wait to get back. His first port of call was London, where eventually he found his niche as afree lance writer, publishing articles in magazines such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar,Queen, Town, Woman's Own, Time & Tide, Spectator, etc. He moved to NewYork in November 1963, where he was put under contract to Broadway Producer Saint-Subber, for whom he wrote an unproduced play, and worked as a play doctor and editor. Then he went to work for rock n Roll promoter Bill Graham, helping open the fabled rock palace, Filmore East where artists such as Big Brother and the Holding Company (Janis Joplin) Grace Slick and the Jefferson Aeroplane, The Who, Motley Crue, Credence Clearwater Revival and others gave weekend concerts. He left Graham for a position with the classic impresario Sol Hurok. In his capacity with Hurok, Michael became involved in tours featuring artists such as Maria Callas, Rudolf Nureyev, Margot Fonteyn, the Royal, Bolshoi, and Stuttgart Ballet companies ,as well as solo artists such as Arthur Rubinstein, Rostropovic, Isaac Stern etc.He was a victim of a bomb incident on January 26, 1972 when Hurok's offices were attacked by members of the Jewish Defence League (later pronounced a TerroristOrganization) who were protesting Hurok's involvement in the Soviet/American exchange of artists. Michael appeared on the front page of the New York Times as "unidentified woman on a stretcher" being carried out of the building by firemen. He instantly grew a mustache. He helped produce an evening featuring Agnes de Mille, the famous choreographer/dance historian in her program CONVERSATIONS WITH THE DANCE, in conjunction with the Joffrey Ballet. The event was televised by PBS. and the production was nominated for an Emmy.Agnes and Michael lost the Emmy to Luciano Pavarotti. However, his participation in the program lead to a role with the newly formedOrion Pictures, and later, a 23 year involvement in film with the De Laurentiis family. He now lives in Los Angeles with his companion of 30 years, Eduardo de la Grana, and is returning to his first love - writing. This is his first book, and he believes that life begins anew for him at age 77.
