Tuvieron que pasar muchos años desde su publicación en 1851 para que Moby Dick fuera finalmente juzgada como una de las grandes obras de la literatura universal. En la actualidad ya no se le disputa semejante consideración a este libro de extraordinaria riqueza, que encierra en sus páginas un relato de aventuras, un tratado sobre ballenas y balleneros, y, ante todo, una compleja reflexión sobre el ser humano, simbolizada en la búsqueda de la venganza del atormentado capitán Ahab. Muchas y muy variadas han sido las interpretaciones de esta novela, claro ejemplo de libro abierto, que sugiere para que después el lector interprete, y que ofrece una poderosa muestra del arte de narrar de Herman Melville, cuyo relato, como afirma Gustavo Martín Garzo, en el prólogo, «llegará a ser tan vivo y convincente que nadie que lo haya leído alguna vez podrá olvidarlo jamás».
