If I have to describe this book with one word, it would be delightful. Gerald Durrell´s anecdotes about his family and their life on Corfu are funny, cozy and heartwarming. And even though I suspect that not everything has been as shiny and happy as it has been described in this book, this doesn´t t...
I absolutely LOVE it when I read a book and immediately want to find everything that author has ever written and binge read the heck out of their work. I saw a commercial for a new ITV program called The Durrells which intrigued me...especially when I learned it was adapted from a book. I threw it o...
The cover of my Penguin edition calls this a "autobiographical novel" and at the end I was left wondering how much of the book was true and how much of it was fictionalised. I came away from it feeling like it was truth exaggerated for comic effect and after some googling about the author, that see...
It's really a collection of amazing anecdotes, as memorized by a slightly strange child, but I'm ok with that. The stories are incredibly funny, and very telling of animal and human nature. Durrell seemed a very democratic child, so the liberal use of the word "peasants", even when the label really ...
What could produce more music, magic, and mayhem than a Broadway show? Sam Harris’ book of anecdotes about growing up gay, fabulous, and talented is funny, heartfelt, and self-deprecating. There are insights into well-known superstars, the ups and downs of alcoholism, and the dredge of trying to bre...

Re-read via the BBCNaturalist Gerald Durrell's magical 1930s childhood with his eccentric family on the Greek island of Corfu. Stars Celia Imrie.1956 - such a good year!
I started reading this book at least a year ago and couldn't really progress much each time I picked it up. Somehow for me his story swings from hilariously funny to let's-skip-this-part even in a span of one chapter. Well, at least I've finished it now.
I had seen the Masterpiece Theatre production of this book with Imelda Staunton as the mother and loved it, and we have Durrell's wonderful "The Amateur Naturalist," which details how to observe, care for, and learn from wildlife. I so enjoyed reading and laughing with this memoir of 10-year-old Ger...
I went back and decided to write a review on this non-fictional novel/memoir (not all events are fully true I believe) which is considered by some to be a modern classic. I remember finding a box of Gerald Durrell stories on the shelf as a twelve year old and reading them in luxury. They captivated ...
