For the first time, ten years after her abduction from her Salt Lake City bedroom, Elizabeth Smart reveals how she survived and the secret to forging a new life in the wake of a brutal crimeOn June 5, 2002, fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Smart, the daughter of a close-knit Mormon family, was taken from her home in the middle of the night by religious fanatic, Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. She was kept chained, dressed in disguise, repeatedly raped, and told she and her family would be killed if she tried to escape. After her rescue on March 12, 2003, she rejoined her family and worked to pick up the pieces of her life. Now for the first time, in her memoir, MY STORY, she tells of the constant fear she endured every hour, her courageous determination to maintain hope, and how she devised a plan to manipulate her captors and convinced them to return to Utah, where she was rescued minutes after arriving.  Smart explains how her faith helped her stay sane in the midst of a nightmare and how she found the strength to confront her captors at their trial and see that justice was served. In the nine years after her rescue, Smart transformed from victim to advocate, traveling the country and working to educate, inspire and foster change. She has created a foundation to help prevent crimes against children and is a frequent public speaker. In  2012, she married Matthew Gilmour, whom she met doing mission work in Paris for her church, in a fairy tale wedding that made the cover of People magazine.

3.0 Book 25/100: My Story by Elizabeth Smart
Like many of these, "I went through something harrowing" memoirs, this isn't something you read because you want great writing. The writing here is stilted and oftentimes repetitive, and I'm willing to be forgiving of that because it's important to tell the stories of regular, non-writer people who ...

I picked this book up for two reasons, first: Elizabeth Smart and I are about the same age, I remember being 13 when she went missing and thinking how weird it was and seeing it on the news a lot. Second I'm trying to finished up the 2015 popsugar reading challenge and one of the challenges I was ha...

0.5 Wasting a good survival story
First the good. On her rescue. Pro - Good that she was reused. Con - That she didn't thank the people who rescued her, but the god of her religious delusion. Saying that her god saved her means that her god have the power to save all other kidnapped children but didn't save them and let them...

I listened to this on audio, and while I was riveted by Elizabeth Smart's story and the horror that she endured, I have to agree with others who admit to having problems with the book itself. The audio is narrated by Elizabeth Smart herself, who very often took a sarcastic tone when reading parts whe...

I probably should have stopped reading this early on when I realized that it would be somewhat of a religious book. Well, not like the bible or anything, but the author pretty much thanked God for getting her kidnapped, and so I should definitely have stopped reading at that point, because Milla + r...
