A funny nonsense poem (I would expect no less from Lear). Lear died before he finished it, so Ogden Nash filled in the blanks. It's also from the 1960s, and Burkert's introduction laments that the Blue Whale might soon be extinct. It's still an endangered species, but it's not extinct yet.
