Making Crime Pay
Making Crime Pay rated it 10 years ago
The big clock of the title is our seemingly inevitable fate; time marching on relentlessly towards our end, and this also sums up the predicament the protagonist feels in this story of a man investigating himself for a murder he didn’t commit. The lovely Pauline Delos has been murdered by her boyf...

When Raymond Chandler says that a noir crime book is as good or better than his own, I want to believe it. I'm not sure why he said it, but it certainly wasn't true for me. Maybe he inflated my expectations. The set-up is good: George Stroud is a philanderer and heavy drinker and he doesn't seem to ...

Save for sputtering out at the ending, this would have been a terrific noir. It seems George would still have some 'splaining to do to the NYPD and their investigation. Still, a delicious read for most of its brief length.

This was a wild ride! I don't even know what shelves to put it on. Magic mushrooms are entirely optional, but they could enhance your enjoyment of this escapade. Put on your psychedelic 3-D glasses and enjoy the trip. See you when you touch down.

i have admired the john farrow film adaptation of this book for a long time, and i have to say it probably clouded my enjoyment of the novel though i love the conceit of george stroud's dilemma his story, above all. the big clock is an extended metaphor throughout the novel, of business and society ...

This book started off in a rambling and confusing mix of magical realism and time-jumping, with too many underdeveloped characters to track. But as I read more, the underlying story developed, characters became more relateable and the story ended up being pretty interesting. Definitely NOT one for...

Full of interesting stuff - I never knew the first thing about bestiaries until I opened this book. Not quite as...magical as I imagined it would be, but a good read nonetheless.

Overall: VERY GOOD. I flew through this. At times it bogs down slightly in the super intricate politics of Europe in the 1930s, mostly towards the end, but overall, really fun, super engaging. He's awesome at pulling in these tiny little threads of magic realism that add a little flavor without bein...

I liked some of his newer stuff the most. His poetry involves a lot of the same themes that he tackles in his novels, so it was interesting to see him come at them from a different angle. But in general they felt a little bit like his own personal diary, not as accessible and relatable as I generall...

10 stars, a hundred. I was so disappointed when I turned the page and saw that it was over. Darth Vadar style, all NooooOOoooOOOoo......The back jacket says this is a book about a quest to find the Caravan Bestiary, a legendary, lost illuminated manuscript detailing all the mythical creatures who we...
