Er. Ow. And possibly "ack!"I kind of got blind-sided by this one, at least at first. The description of the boy in the plum tree yelling philosophy at his classmates has me expecting something a bit more serio-comic. But the situation gets dark very quickly, and even before things get really horribl...
When picking up Nothing, a reader needs to be prepared to suspend their disbelief an extraordinary amount for what is meant to be a realistic, contemporary story. A young (13-14) boy decides that nothing means anything, so he decides to spend his days in a tree yelling what are, in translation, irri...
This book is pure nihilism, which means that it is profoundly fucked up. You're either going to love it or hate it, and it will most certainly offend you, but I do think it's worth a read.
This is a strange, strange book. I had an hour and a half to kill before a meeting and picked this off the shelf because it seemed like a quick read.Plum-tree boy reminded me so much of Grendel. And I was afraid of this book. I think someone compared it to Lord of the Flies. Never has that sounded m...
Although I do pay a little attention to YA news, I heard about Nothing from an Italian bookstore newsletter, promoting the brand-new Italian translation. The pitch made the book sound so scandalous I just had to check it out (and I wondered, would something like that even get published in the US?). ...
Buy two copies. Burn one and keep the ashes in a matchbox on your desk. You'll want the second to reread.A fearlessly written novel. Every time I turned the page, I thought--is the author really going to go there? And then she did.I'm adding it to my list of all-time favorite books. Not because I li...
What a creepy book! But the real scary aspect of this novel is the truth about the gang mentality… kids being lead astray like lemmings to the sea. The impulsive, easily lead 13-14 year old succumbing to the power of peer pressure and how that sense of belonging to a group can override morality and ...
full review on my blog, holes In My brainNOTHING's pemise is simple enough. Pierre Anthon mocks his classmates (13-14 year olds) about the meaningless of life, of how everything is nothing, and how nothing matters. Of course, the children set out to prove him wrong, to prove that they can build a pi...
This Danish book is unique and well-written. I can't say that I enjoyed reading it exactly. If it hadn't been such a quick read, I might have had trouble sticking with it. But it's worthwhile and discussable, and I'm glad it has received recognition in the U.S.
