I first read this book as a teenager, and in some ways it was more terrifying than all the Stephen King books I was busily gobbling up at the time. It might have been the first book I read that illustrated, in a way that felt viscerally true, how easily the veneer of civilization can break down. ...

It might be regarded as a classic book, but "Lord of the Flies" is not what I would describe as an easy read. Confronting the reader, as William Golding does, with a rather bleak and brutal portrayal of youth unfettered by the boundaries of social norms. Indeed, this novel suggests we may remain a v...

Team reading this one with my 12-year-old. He doesn't love it, and I don't blame him, really. The language and tendency to use a bunch of words with out saying anything is kind of grating. According to my pre-teen: "This author just says 'and' over and over. And this and this and that and that." B...

An utterly chilling take on the dark(er) side of playground squabbles. I'm usually loath to describe any book as having any impact on my outlook, as I mainly read books for pleasure, not for life lessons. But LotF is an exception. The slow, sickening reveal of the bottomless pit that is human behavi...

For some reason I have never read this classic. I'm really glad I finally got around to it and definitely enjoyed this one. Its easy to see why its timeless and considered a classic. The themes and moral of the story are still reverent to today's time period. A plane crashes on a remote island wi...

Well, this wasn't exactly enjoyable, but it certainly is a classic worth reading. What I really like about this book is that it is GREAT for discussions. Some classics that we read in school, I just think aren't all that interesting to discuss. But Lord of the Flies actually is really thought prov...

Well thank goodness for short books. I loved The Lord of the Rings, but 1,000 plus pages is a lot to get through. This whole book felt more like a short story to me (that is not a complaint by the way) and I was able to get through it in about 2 and a half hours.Though I liked the book (4.5 stars) I...

Damn it! This storyline is pretty scary. A person could find so many symbolisms for life themes, but also I can just imagine real people eroding into these base versions of themselves in a situation like this. I'm sure this story helped to inspire many of our modern reads.

I some how escaped school without having to read this book. I also went into this book thinking that I probably wouldn't like it. I knew the plot and always thought it wasn't a book I wanted to read but because I'm trying to add more classics to my reading I picked it up. I was surprised to find th...
