Didn’t wow me quite as much as the other McKillip books I’ve read recently–parts of it seemed a little clunky and overly pointed–but still in my favorite category of her books. I did definitely like several of the characters. And it has a gorgeous cover! [Sept. 2010]
I felt I could've given this a five star review if 1- the story didn't just abruptly end 2- if the plot had started before page 100 and something and 3- if we had more of Mistral and Arneth.
There is an almost leisurely pace to the book. The descriptions are wonderful, but at times the plot feels a little too slow. In some ways, I think the plot would've worked better as a poem than as a novel, if that makes sense.
She's gotten wildly prolific in the last few years, and I'm not complaining. She remains one of the best fantasy authors.
