SusannaG - Confessions of a Crazy Cat Lady
On Basilisk Station is the first Honor Harrington novel (which is a very long-running series at this point, I believe), and is an example of that species of science fiction generally known as "space opera." It's also clearly modeled on the Horatio Hornblower stories (the author's note thanks C.S. ...

For some reason my writer brain intruded constantly throughout my reading of this book. Certainly my reader brain kept me reading, wondering what would happen next, but my writer brain would not shut up. I think part of that is because this is the first military scifi book I've read (ever? surely no...

This book isn’t good. I was told it was “Space Opera” but this is more like “Military Space Adventure”. Think Star Trek but with more guns death and jargon.Did I mention the jargon. If you aren’t into the military, or care about how big people’s guns are then this book will loose you quick with it’s...

For my thoughts on the book, plot, characters, etc. please see my review. As can be seen from my review above, I love this series and have revisited Manticore and its universe many times. Most of the books so far have been five stars or high fours. So when this and a later audiobook came up on sal...

It was just a bit too boring. Too elaborate, too many explanations. Not the most original world-building, more run-of-the-mill space opera terrain. But I have no idea why so complicated then. And no action so far. So I'm skipping this for some re-reads of old favourites.

Fun space going update of Horatio Hornblower novels (which I love). Bogged down by excessive explanation of sci-fi propulsion and weapons systems. Which I skimmed over and missed nothing although it's probably 30% of the text. The e-book version I had tended to skip from one scene to another with...

What can I say, this book just didn't do it for me. Although the ending was pretty exciting, the majority of On Basilisk Station was just too slow-paced and dull for my liking. It took me a while to make myself finish this. On Basilisk Station is a space opera that follows the command of Honor Har...

I tried. I really did. And when it got tough, I read some more reviews and was quickly convinced that this was not for me. It was recommended to me because of my unnatural affection for Jean Johnson's Theirs Not to Reason Why series. But I can't figure out why anyone favorably compared these two ser...

I really liked Honor and her moral as well as her passion for what her duties entailed. Some of the pages came of really dry, especially the sections with the technical stuff. What really made me enjoy this book was what transpired after the arrival at the Basilisk Station. The action prior that rea...
