With a career, a boyfriend, and a loving family, Piper Kerman barely resembles the reckless young woman who delivered a suitcase of drug money ten years before. But that past has caught up with her. Convicted and sentenced to fifteen months at the infamous federal correctional facility in Danbury, Connecticut, the well-heeled Smith College alumna is now inmate #11187–424—one of the millions of people who disappear “down the rabbit hole” of the American penal system. From her first strip search to her final release, Kerman learns to navigate this strange world with its strictly enforced codes of behavior and arbitrary rules. She meets women from all walks of life, who surprise her with small tokens of generosity, hard words of wisdom, and simple acts of acceptance. Heartbreaking, hilarious, and at times enraging, Kerman’s story offers a rare look into the lives of women in prison—why it is we lock so many away and what happens to them when they’re there.

3.0 Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison
I would give this book 3 1/2 stars. It is a stream of consciousness treatise on the federal prison system in the US. It is a fascinating reading experience which portrays very pointedly that our prison system as a whole is expensive and very ineffectual, locking many people up for all the wrong rea...

I liked this book so much more than I expected I would! I've watched the Netflix series, in which Piper is an unbearable brat. But the Piper who eloquently relates her memoir doesn't afford herself any coddling, is straightforward in accepting her responsibility, and uses her story to reflect on her...

2.0 Orange Is the New Black
I think a lot more of effort could have been put into the writing of this book. It was technically correct but the way an essay you make for school, full of data and focusing on the wrong things... For me it became dull and loooong. I wish I knew more about other people mentioned here. Didn't really...

4.0 Memoirs Are the New Black
I listened to the audiobook after having watched the first season of the show on DVD. (I don't have cable, so I binge-watch DVDs from the library and am always at least one season behind everyone else. No spoilers, please!) Having enjoyed season one of the show, I thoroughly enjoyed the memoir t...
