Melody isn't able to move her limbs or even speak. All of her thoughts are stuck inside of her head and she needs to prove to everyone that she is just as smart as them. However, doing this won't be easy.
This is a good story! The only thing that I might have disliked about this book was the ending. The characters were easy to relate to and the book had some comedic elements. I would highly recommend this book!
Melody has cerebral palsy. Melody cannot walk or talk. She has been relegated to the special needs classrooms with a endlessly revolving door of nightmarishly boorish teachers. A doctor told her mother that she was severely retarded. Seriously. What doctor uses that sort of language? But her m...
From award-winning author Sharon Draper comes Out of My Mind, the story of a brilliant girl who cannot speak or write. “If there is one book teens and parents (and everyone else) should read this year, Out of My Mind should be it” (Denver Post). Melody is not like most people. She cannot walk or tal...
Though this book does read a bit young (about 3rd grade) it delivers its message and connects with the reader. There are some parts of the book that do feel dated (references to MySpace etc.), which might put off a few kids who want to read more cutting edge stuff, but these are relatively minor. Th...

10/6/13 ** Melody has CP and has no good way to communicate abstract (and even many literal) ideas until she gets an electronic communication device when in 5th grade. Though most people don't realize it, she is tremendously gifted in math and language, with a nearly photographic memory. Imagine h...
I read a lot of YA but I tend to stick to books with some element of sci-fi, fantasy or romance. This book has none of that and I can't recommend it enough for readers of all ages. It's about Melody - can't talk, can't walk, presumed by most of the world to be "retarded". In actuality a girl of incr...
I'm really torn about how to review this book. There was a lot to like. I have read some reviews that didn't care for the main character, Melody, but I did like her, and enjoyed most of her story, I even cried a bit at one point. It opened my eyes to the road a person with cerebral palsy might trave...
