Back in middle school, when I was discovering fantasy books and reading through my school library, one of the very first series that I found and devoured was Susan Cooper’s The Dark is Rising sequence. The library initially only had the first two or three books, but over the course of my time there,...

This has never been my favorite of the series, and still isn't. There's nothing wrong with it, it just doesn't grab me as much of the others. When I first read the series, I actually read it last. And, frankly, didn't feel like that was a problem. Still, it was worth the read for the sake of fuller ...

I read this years ago and remembered it to be the least exciting of the Dark is Rising series. The audiobook reading of it was fine, but it was a little boring - though that may have been because I remembered the story (which is more than I can say for many books I've read!).

I read the first half of OSUS thinking it was a prequel, and I think that may have influenced my opinion of the book. I kept waiting for the action to start, when in reality it had been going on for quite awhile already. So far I'm not too impressed by this 'highly acclaimed series', but it's not ba...

This series was recommended as similar to the Narnia books. But you know what? I love this book and don't care for CS Lewis. The book tells the story of some bored children on holiday who find a secret map. Could it lead to King Arthur's grail? This book falls on the younger side and it's a quick...

Always a favourite. This story is too embedded in my childhood. Even though I've become more critical of it, it's still magical.Cooper writes an action-packed adventure. Wonder why those nuffers didn't make this story into a film first? It's got a small cast, a cheap set and very little requirement ...

This review is also available on my blog, Stumptown Books.I had an odd sense of déja vu when I picked up this book. I sat there staring at the cover until finally I realized this book had sat on my shelf when I was a kid. Immediately I wondered if I had ever read it when I was younger, and set to ...

I read this long enough ago that I'd forgotten many of the salient facts. I especially forgot how scary this book is! I was reading it at night and had to put it down till the sun came back up. I love Arthurian-flavored tales, and this has lots of wonderful details. The characters are likable, the s...

It's been almost more than ten years now since I first read these books--and, indeed, that was the only time I read them. So much time has passed, with so many things changing and constantly keeping my attention away, that to sit down again with books I had read as a kid, and let my heart be taken u...
