Paladin of Souls was my favorite of the three. It takes place about three years after the events in the first book and follows the adventures of Ista, the former Royina (Queen, I guess) of Chalion, and Iselle's mother. Poor Ista has had a very difficult life and now everyone thinks she's crazy. She'...
"Paladin of Souls", the second chapter of Lois McMaster Bujold's Chalion trilogy is just as fantastic as "The Curse of Chalion" and maybe slightly better. Shifting the focus from Cazaril and royal court, Bujold followed the formerly mad dowager royina Ista through a false pilgrimage into the heart o...
Paladin of Souls (Chalion, #2) by Lois McMaster Bujold Paladin of Souls is a fantastic story, a tale of reluctant saints and enigmatic gods, of isolation and reconciliation and redemption. In the first novel in the series, The Curse of Chalion, we followed the journey of the ever-forgiving, ever-no...
I loved this even more than the first book in this world, The Curse of Chalion--and I loved Chalion a lot, which was my first book by Lois McMaster Bujold. Bujold was well known before these high fantasy works for a science fiction series, the Vorkosigan Saga. And after her fantasy I turned to those...
A nearly perfect book, and one I'm already thinking I should reread. Ista is bitter, prickly, mature, and complex; she may be one of my favorite heroines from the past year. As a side note, this is a great example of having a stable of female characters with divergent agendas who are not strictly di...
I'm really enjoying this series. I took a while to change mental tracks after following the adventures of Cazaril in the first book. I enjoy the worldbuilding, especially the religious aspects. And, so as not to be spoilery- there's a formula to the second half of the book that I really like.
*happy sigh* There's nothing quite like rereading a book you read so long ago you don't remember much about it other than that it was AWESOME, and discovering it was just as amazing as you remembered. Ista is one of the best heroines in fantasy literature, for sure.Read this book! If you like fantas...
Following the resounding success of my Locus Quest, I faced a dilemma: which reading list to follow it up with? Variety is the spice of life, so I’ve decided to diversify and pursue six different lists simultaneously. This book falls into my LOCUS FANTASY list.As the Locus Sci-Fi Award winners list ...
Unexpectedly captivating. I'm a longtime fantasy reader, but I've gotten tired of the current crop of twenty year old heroines, the descriptions of their clothes, their vague struggles with boyfriends, and the development of their special powers. Even if coming-into-one's power storylines are set wi...
