Published in 2000, this book was somehow completely off my radar. The six short stories in this volume all feature people who are generally unhappy. They are unhappy for different reasons, but every one of them is trying their best, and none are wallowing in their unhappiness. Pastoralia, my favor...

Keeping this short and sweet. This is another wonderful collection from George Saunders. So far I've loved every collection of his I've read (I only have one more left now to read, I believe). Saunders has such a unique voice, even when he writes in third person. You really get into the minds of a...

I'm really more of a 3.5 on this one, but I feel generous today, so I'm going to officially record this rating as a 4. Because I like the darkness, the slightly skewed sense of humor, the obvious grain of salt with which the author looks at modern society. But it also seemed a little repetitive - ...

I really enjoyed the opening story of this collection by George Saunders, and based on it alone, I will search out some more of his work. I do have to say, however, that many of the stories are kind of repetitive and one-note. I would characterize his satire as less Vonnegut-like, and more Swiftian....

The first story/novella was I thought the strongest of the collection, but the language in the last one was...

The mind, as the saying goes, is a complex place. We have trouble keeping our own thoughts under control let alone knowing what others may be thinking. Even in our most rational moments our mind takes in a wealth of sensory information, makes sense of it, categorizes it, and then makes decisions as ...

This is one of my friend Fred's favorite books. Like, since college. He always reads books I send him, and amazingly, I'd never read Pastoralia. He gave me one of his 4 copies, and I read it rather quickly. The only reason I didn't give it 4 stars (because I do think it's wonderfully written) is th...

Big disappointment. Most of the stories are pointless.
