The plot is still a bit so so but I enjoyed the artwork more in this one. Some of the panels are amazing looking but at times it definitely feels like style over substance.
Charley is home for a few weeks and bumps into Blue, a member of the French Foreign Legion who tells him the story of his experience of the trench war and the utter futile mess that was made of some of the soldiers. Hard hitting stuff and rather graphic.
This is an interesting look at the magazine Battle from the point of view of some of it's more popular strips. Some were long-running, some short runs but they all dealt with war, mostly world war II but some World War I (Charley's War in particular) and the Vietnam War (Fighting Mann) are included...
Charley sees the end of the mutiny, becomes a stretcher bearer, there's a flashforward to an older man revisiting the war sites, Charley has his last days as a stretcher bearer and becomes a sniper Interesting but hard reading.
The start of Charley's story in World War I. Charley volunteers, underage, to fight in World War I and in Battle Magazine they tell his story. Charley is an everyman, not based on a real person but based on real stories and experiences from that time. Not written in praise of war but to shine a s...

The story is simply told, juxtaposed occasionally by letters and cards from home that talk about a different world. It's powerful stuff and should be compulsary read...
This time Charley is gassed, injured, witnesses atrocities and returns to England where he witnesses Zeppelin bombing. It's graphic and terrible and should be part of every young person's education. People need to see how nasty war is and how people can make assumptions about cowardice, fear and b...
