Wonderfully done. Short, simple, and to the point about one of the most talented and brilliant people in the world.

This is not a book about what why each of the profiled intellectuals profiled are worthy of being remembered, but it's mostly how they are flawed human beings. The author would pick an intellectual, barely explain why they are important today, and then dwell on the persons foibles to a churlish degr...

I expected it to not go very in dept about any part of Ireland's history, since it's subtitle is "A Concise History from the Twelfth Century to the Present Day". I think this one was a little too concise. I don't think I've read a history of a entire country before, even one that spans less than 1...

I find myself recommending this book over the other general American history books, even though it was written by a British historian. There is something to his analysis that really fills in the holes in one's knowledge about many topics. I also liked the fact that he chose to go for big movements,...

Paul Johnson is a British journalist, a believing Catholic--and a conservative. That will put some people off--although it's notable I saw more than one review from readers who said in spite of that they found this book incisive and readable. For me it wasn't something off-putting but something I so...

Far too short. I appreciate the attempt, but it serves as little more than an apéritif. Especially regarding Churchill's pre-WWI life, it proceeds at a breakneck pace. What results is a whir of events and, more egregiously, names that are given little explanation or context.Post-WWI, it gets better....

This book should be named The Other Side of Left-Wing Intellectuals. It is very misleading to just say Intellectuals because it made me expect that it would talk about prominent thinkers and would analyze their thoughts and their influences, etc.Well, Johnson does discuss their thoughts, but more im...

Well, a great deal of knowledge, some I find very eye opening (e.g Wagner's creating mode, T.S. Eliot's story, or Balenciaga's high fashion, Mark Twain's story telling, Victor Hugo's intellectuals and Picasso's morals - I've never come across these lives or these aspects of their lives before)But, t...
