Penny McFarlane worked as a teacher in primary and secondary schools for fifteen years before qualifying as a dramatherapist. Her interest has always been in helping children build resilience and self esteem despite their surroundings and, to further this, she set up a project which introduced Creative Arts Therapies into inner city schools in her area. The experience of writing her first book 'Dramatherapy: developing emotional stability', which explained the way dramatherapy can help children with emotional and behavioural problems, encouraged her to study for an MA in Professional Writing. Together with Jenny Harvey, she set up a children's bereavement charity which, in turn, led to her working with Jenny on a multi-agency support team focusing, in her role as a dramatherapist, on promoting the voice of the child. Penny's aim has always been to raise the profile of dramatherapy through writing user friendly books accessible to all.Jenny Harvey has been practising as a family therapist for six years as a member of a multi-agency support team in Devon, working with primary school children and their families in need of emotional support. She previously co-founded a children's bereavement charity with her friend, colleague and co-author Penny McFarlane. Jenny began life as a therapist after many years as a full-time mother of four children, training initially as a person-centred counsellor before studying psychology, becoming particularly interested in children's cognitive and emotional development. Whilst trainng as a counsellor, Jenny worked as a bereavement counsellor supporting young adults who had experienced traumatic or complicated loss. She was interested in the way that difficult issues are explored and talked about, and for her master's degree research project, explored the voice of the child that often goes unheard both in therapy and within their families. Jenny has a Master degree in Systemic Family Therapy, a degree in Psychology and a Diploma in Counselling.
