Dr. Peter DeWitt (Ed.D.) has been a principal in Upstate, NY since 2006. Prior to being a principal, he taught elementary school in several city schools for eleven years. Peter blogs at Finding Common Ground for Education Week. He is a freelance writer for Vanguard Magazine (SAANYS) and the International Center for Leadership in Education (ICLE) where he is also an educational consultant. Peter has presented at state and national conferences around the U.S. His presentations focus on struggling learners as well as safeguarding LGBT students and other social justice topics. He did his doctoral dissertation on the subject of safeguarding LGBT students. His book entitled Dignity for All: Safeguarding LGBT Students was published by Corwin Press in March of 2012. His articles have appeared in education journals at the state, national and international level. He has written for Principal Magazine, Education Week, Educational Leadership, ASCD Whole Child and ASCD Express. He has been interviewed by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), the National Education Association (NEA) the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) and ABCnews.com. In addition, Peter is an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Education at the College of Saint Rose. From January of '08 through August '11, he was the educational consultant for News Channel 13 (WNYT, NBC Affiliate). He did parenting segments with reporter Subrina Dhammi and education segments with anchor/reporter Elaine Houston.
