Piper Mejia is the current president of Tauranga Writers, the longest writing group in New Zealand. As an advocate for New Zealand writers and literature she was the co-editor of Write Off Line (2012/2013/2014) and Beyond This... (2012/2013); collections of writing by New Zealand intermediate and secondary students, and continues to manage the national writing competitions by the same names. In 2014 her short story Lockdown (included in the horror flash fiction collection Baby Teeth: Bite-Sized Tales of Terror) was short listed for the Sir Julius Vogel Award for science fiction and fantasy writing, she won a national poetry competition for her poem Sounds of Evolution and her novella Mika (co-written with Lee Murray) won the Paper Road Press Shortcuts competition (to published in the the inaugural Shortcuts series in 2015).
