Alternate history Regency mystery. I read this a few years ago and didn’t quite enjoy it. But this time I loved it; loved Sarah and her integrity, her desire to do the right thing and also her mistakes and blind spots. Robins also writes about the London underworld without seeming gratuitous or voye...

Interesting story about a woman in a world quite like ours but a little different which the author explains in a postscript. Sarah ran away with her brother's fencing master, when he dies she returns to London to live. Her aunt runs a brothel and Sarah finds space in a property she owns on the sit...

I'm giving this four stars because of how much I like the idea of this book, how all the parts of it are things that I adore and have sought so much in other books like this. I just wish I'd, I don't know, enjoyed the book more? It was three stars' worth of enjoyment, not four. For as much as I real...

4.5/5; 5 stars; AThis book was recommended to me by my GR friend, Werner, who manages one of the groups I belong to, Action Heroine Fans. I loved the protagonist in this story, Sarah Tolerance, and she is definitely a worthy character for the Action Heroine Fans to admire! I really enjoyed thi...

This book looked good in the write-up and I liked the cover...sorry, but that does matter some in my choice of books. Something has to catch my eye! Anyway, it started out rather stiffly and seemed sort of choppy. But once I got farther into the story and things started to hang together, then I like...

A sort-of Regency mystery with a female detective. I found the world interesting, and Sarah nicely done, but had a hard time with the pacing and sort of the general atmosphere (I’m having a hard time pinpointing exactly what I didn’t like about it, which is why that sentence is so vague). (Dec 2011)

Good thing the jacket cover gives a summary of who Sarah Tolerance is before we start the book... that's my only nit with this book, that it plunges us in without much background about our main character. We get hints and clues, but there's much "assumed" and much revealed only slowly, over the cour...

My mother sent me to the library on her behalf to find some books she'd been wanting to read, and while browsing the shelves, this one caught my eye. So I checked it out for myself. This book is not one that can be easily classified. It has romantic elements, but it's not a romance. And while it i...
Title and Statement of Responsibility
The plot was a little slow at times, but I appreciated her attention to period detail, plus the little touches of alternate reality that made it more vibrant. The ending was somewhat predictable, but I think I am likely to read the next book in the series.

Miss Sarah Tolerance is a worthy successor to Elizabeth Bennet. Years before she eloped with her brother's fencing instructor; now, with a ruined reputation, she has returned to London. She has too much pride to become a whore, and is to female and well-bred for most other occupations, and so out ...
