the first half or so of the novel is excellent...well-written, expertly drawn depiction of an island community, loads of atmosphere, and several genuinely foreboding and shivery moments. even better, the novel's ideas start with 'unsettling-thing-in-the-attic' and proceed to slowly build on that can...
