Harry Arno was grossing six to seven thousand dollars a week running a South Miami Beach gambling operation. To protect his position, he was forced to cut a deal with the local muscle, Jimmy Capotorto (Jimmy Cap to the likes of Harry), an even fifty-fifty split. For years Harry had been padding his own stake by skimming a grand a week off the top. A couple of local detectives wise to sticky fingers try to bag Jimmy the Cap by putting the squeeze on Harry. Now, the dicks suggest, would be a good time for Harry to rat the mobster out.U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens has his own agenda. He has to deliver Harry to a Federal grand jury to testify at Jimmy's drug-running trial. Even though he's a step slower that he used to be, Harry's no fool. When Jimmy Cap's men are a hair too slow gunning him down and Raylan's surveillance slips, Harry's already two steps ahead of them. Years of preparation pay off and Harry slips out of the country pronto. Being on the lam is no time to get soft, but Harry didn't plan on missing his companion Joyce so much. Sneaking her to his hideout could save him from loneliness but Joyce's quick departure tips off his trackers. Jimmy Cap's men follow Joyce while Raylan stays close behind. The three sides end up in Rapallo, Italy, watching their own backs while keeping abreast of Harry's. But it's not until the chase leads back to Miami that the real winners and losers are revealed. Series: Raylan Givens (#1)
An incongruous story at best. A modern cowboy wanna-be, U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, has taken off for Italy in pursuit of Harry who is being sought by a number of felons who want to do him harm. I started reading the Raylan Givens series after reading an interview with Elmore Leonard who rem...
This was my first exposure to an Elmore Leonard book. Initially, I was put off my his very "unwriterly" means of writing. I loved the dialogue though, so I kept reading along. For the most part, I really liked Raylan and Joyce. Harry was a prick and I would have let the mob have him.The story wa...
I enjoyed it; it is different from what you might be used to from the series because it is set before the events depicted in "Fire in the Hole" (though the ending of this book strongly resembles the initial set of events in Justified that send Raylan back to Kentucky).Great story line and interestin...
What took me so long to read Elmore Leonard? This was fantastic, loved it from start to finish. Raylan Givens is a great character, so good I might even watch the TV show that features him. Headed to the library to get the next one...
I liked this one quite a bit but I like Raylan Givens a lot. This is the first book starring the throwback Deputy Marshall and it is pretty much what you would expect. The characters are excellent, the dialog pops, the story move right along to a satisfying ending. Elmore Leonard is a goddamned geni...
