At the beginning of the year, Miss Sarton "felt devalued as a woman, as a lover, and as a writer." She was still trying to come to terms with a devastating review of her latest novel, A Reckoning, in the New York Times Book Review, devasting for her even though reviews as a whole had been favorable. She was going though a difficult time in her private life and in June suffered a mastectomy. But, as she says, "When there is personal darkness, when there is pain to overcome, when we are forced to renew ourselves against all the odds, the psychic energy required simply to survive has tremendous force."
