Red Mars is no mere romp across the red planet, nor is it a simple story of survival. It's an epic of colonization, chronicling in painstaking detail and moving lyricism the lives of its first colonists as they travel to Mars, study the planet, and lay the foundations for a new world. The scope is...

I had mixed feelings about this book. Although it took me forever to get through it, that had more to do with my schedule than my interest. This is a very descriptive book, and sometimes I get bogged down with descriptive books, but I didn’t have too much trouble with this one because the descriptio...

Red Mars is a book that has great strengths and weaknesses. Its srengths are the process of the colonization of Mars itself. The Mars of the book is the real Mars and not a fantasy Mars and the book is steeped in its geology and geography. The time frame of the book is epic spanning several decad...

"It always seemed to him that sunset more than any other time of day made it clear that they stood on an alien planet; something in the slant and redness of the light was fundamentally wrong, upsetting expectations wired into the savannah brain over millions of years." KSR is a marmite kind of au...

A word of warning, this book is absolutely hard SF. I love hard SF so I thought this book was a great read. I would have rated it 5 stars but for the way the author went into so much detail about the travels across the surface of Mars. I felt like in some cases I needed a room-sized globe of Mars.

This book details the colonization (and then terraforming) of Mars by the initial colonists (the First Hundred). It is a character driven story that also uses a significant amount of hard science throughout the book. It is well written and I will be reading the followup novels.

3.5, really. This is a really solid book. Not amazing, not awesome, but in no way did I find it bad. This novel covers the colonization of Mars, from the first landing, to a couple of waves of settlers after that. The story isn't strictly linear, starting on Mars, and then flashing-back to when ...

Not sure how this got 4 stars..... it reminds me a lot of Asimov's Foundation books that I enjoyed so many years ago - the characters are all pretty wooden, the plot thin and there are an awful lot of descriptive passages describing Mars that it is a temptation to skip over. However the real charact...

The first novel in a trilogy about the colonization of Mars, the book is well-written, but occasionally drawn out with pseudo-scientific (and actual scientific) exposition. The book is also a bit dated in terms of politics, specifically with the stereotypical Soviet/Russian communists, though somewh...
