Hill loved Austen, and it shows in this mystery which draws quite a bit from Austen. It isn't just the use of quotes of her letters to start each chapter, but also in Hill's using a turn of sentence to open roads of meaning. Austen did that too. The plot concerns a small town, and Hill makes goo...

Nice mystery and serious topics (child abuse, domestic violence and pornography) although book is a little bit lacking interesting, well developed characters. They are all so one-dimensional characters and they seem to lacking competence when doing their police work. It is still a fast, easy to read...
A Scottish-Canadian Blethering On About Books
Children, missing, sick, or murdered, are always an emotional topic, and Hill plays his theme for all it's worth, giving us missing/murdered youngsters in two generations (linked strongly by geography and by the fact that Dalziel investigated both), along with a sub-plot involving the serious illnes...

I'm sure that, if it weren't for the TV series of Dalziel and Pascoe, I would not have been listening to this abridged version of a crime story that was originally published in 1971. This audio version was narrated by Warren Clarke, which was great for the voice of Dalziel, but confusing when Pascoe...

This was a puzzling book to me. I think it was because it examined in depth, the interior life of the two main characters. It wasn't always clear whether they were dreaming or experiencing in real life. The will to live is explored. Events observed while the Inspector is in a coma are valid & portray...
