This was't my favorite edition; last year's was much better. The overall aesthetic is somewhat odd...maybe "petty" and "callow" might be descriptors? There are a couple of standout stories, but as a whole, this one wasn't quite not a disappointment.
Let me preface this by saying, I am lazy. Combine that with how long I took to get around to this review and the fact that a couple of the stories I'd already read in other compilations, and I'm just not even going to try to give my thoughts on every one of these stories. Instead, I'm going to hit t...
Well, it took me almost nine years to get there, but now I am all up to speed on which fantasy was hot in 2006!I don't often read short story collections, so this was a nice change of pace for me. I liked the low-level commitment, and the fact that if I didn't like one story, it wouldn't take long f...

As we pass the halfway mark of the year, we find the first of the new 'best of' anthologies flooding the market. Currently I have 4 monster tomes that I've been reading through, jumping around between favorite authors and intriguing titles. I'm not one to read an anthology from cover-to-cover, but I...
Some fun stories here, though a few of the early ones are skippable.
I do love me some superheros. Granted I can’t tell you which Robin was which in what order, or name off every villain in the Marvel universe. But I do enjoy the occasional graphic novel reading or superhero movie. So I was really glad to get to read this collection. But will the review be good? How ...
Not sure if it's my poor attention span and distraction causing me issues (read: yeah, it probably is), but I just couldn't get into many of these short stories at all.
Above-average collection of short stories. Most are 'modern' rather than 'classic' fantasy.Contents: “Unpossible” by Daryl Gregory “Light” by Kelly Link “The Teashop” by Zoran Zivkovic “The Rope” by Noreen Doyle “Buttons” by William Alexander “Brother of the Moon” by Holly Phillips...
This is a thick reprint of short stories published elsewhere, from lots of big names in the field. My rating is based on the average rating I gave to each individual story -- overall, it's a very good collection, with only six out of the thirty stories that I gave a rating of less than 4. It's a sci...
