My fascination with history can be traced back to a childhood visit to a Roman fort, though the day was completely ruined by the loss of my favourite toy squirrel. As an adult, I wasted several years obtaining a spectacularly unimpressive law degree and failing to be an illustrator before finding some measure of success writing articles for lifestyle magazines and trade papers. Writing freelance rekindled my interest in history and it was discovering the medieval tomb of the Devilstone family in a local church that inspired the story of Thomas - an outlawed knight, alchemist and soldier of fortune who finds himself embroiled in a plot to overthrow Henry VIII.
