Richard Oh took a degree in English Literature and Creative Writing at University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA. He studied there with Lorrie Moore and Kelly Cherry. Returning to Indonesia in the early 1990's, he spent a good part of his life as a creative director of an advertising agency. In the wake of the 1998's political upheaval, in which thousands of innocent Chinese Indonesians were killed in the power struggle, he started writing furiously in response to the rampant injustices. What started out as an outrage turned out to be a humane novel about the racial divide engineered by the military. The Pathfinders of Love was published in 1999. Next came Heart of the Night, a novel about how the Chinese Indonesians coped with life in the aftermath of the 1998's event. There was an hiatus of four years before Richard Oh published another novel, The Rainmaker's Daughter, a story about a nameless woman in flight from a small community in West Kalimantan, and a past that slowly catches up with her.Richard Oh is also a film director. He wrote, produced and directed The Lost Suitcase (Koper) in 2006. The film was in competition in Bangkok International Film Festival and Lyons Asian Film Festival.Richard Oh is represented by Anna Soler-Pont of Pontas Agency (www.pontas-agency.com.
