What is Rise of the Hemisapiens About?Chapter 1 starts with the phrase “5 years into the future….” It introduces a new kind of learning worker and tells how to lead them by becoming one of them. These new workers, “Hemisapiens,” employ collaborative leadership, use cognitive leveraging, and create and apply a learning strategy. Hemisapiens use learning science and technology to “turbo charge” their cognitive abilities, and hence, their productivity. And, they are different besides having more brain power. They have more courage and larger hearts than their predecessors. The name comes from the evolution of automobile engines. In the 1930s, Ford Motor Company developed a new and powerful engine – the Flathead V-8. It outperformed other automaker’s 6 cylinder engines. The Flathead V-8 was indeed flat on the top of the engine and provided little room for the explosive mixture of gasoline and oxygen to power the pistons. In the late 1940’s, GM pioneered the “Overhead Valve” or “Roundhead” engine. It was more rounded on the top and provided more room for gasoline and oxygen to be delivered to the pistons – resulting in a more powerful engine. Then came the 1950’s and Chrysler created the Hemispherical or “Hemihead” engine. The Hemis had a much larger capacity for gasoline and oxygen to power the pistons and resulted in a much more powerful engine than those previously manufactured. The Hemis were very rounded on the top of the engine – making it easy to see that more fuel could be ignited to power the pistons. I bet you can see where this is going. First generation manufacturing workers and managers were like the Ford Flathead V-8. They didn’t need much cognitive fuel to complete their work. Second generation learning workers and supervisors are like the Roundhead engines. (Interesting to note that Peter Drucker coined the phrase “learning worker” shortly after the Roundhead engines appeared.). They need to apply considerable cognition to process information and make decisions to create new products and services. As when the Hemi engines came on the scene, the next generation workers are an entirely different animal. These Hemisapiens will apply a lot more cognitive fuel by using technology to accelerate their ability to learn and augment their decision making to create new knowledge at an increasing rate. Hemisapiens won’t be managed like their predecessors. They see the world differently than those who came before them. They have strong personal and professional values. They have personal integrity, believe in something bigger than themselves, and keep the best interests of others in mind. They also have a great personal attitude with confidence, courage, and reciprocity of knowledge. As a result, they won’t be bullied, intimidated, or manipulated by their boss. They will only respond to leaders that are like them: brainy, courageous, and full of heart. This book introduces the Hemisapiens. It shows how to recognize them and how to become one. More importantly, it tells how to lead them.
