Robbert van Renesse was born in Amsterdam in 1962. After getting a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Free University in Amsterdam, he moved to the United States. Currently he is a Principal Research Scientist in the Department of Computer Science at Cornell University, working in the area of fault tolerant distributed systems, and has published many papers in this area. Besides computer science, Van Renesse plays ukulele, guitar, banjo, and likes to ride a unicycle. Van Renesse lives in Ithaca, NY with his wife and two daughters.
