I'm glad I became acquainted with Hass' work. It showed me another aspect of poetry, another approach and type of voice, that can be found in the writing. It was a very warm and inviting kind of voice that drew me into all the poems and always did its best to keep my attention and offer something in...

Common to all four Korean authors I have read so far is a life deeply scored by war, oppression, hunger and persecution. These travails run from the later Choson era in the middle of the 19th century to the middle of the 1980's, a period which includes the collapse of a regime and civil war; then th...
Steeped in Science, Submersed in Story
I received this book through the goodreads giveaway program. This is a beautiful little book, worth reading and re-reading. I can't say enough about Hass's prose and his approach to poetry: this series of columns from his laureateship is a wonderful, enlightening read for poets, teachers of poetry, and those with little knowledge or experience with poetry.

My review is of this selection, really, not of the poems as individual poems. I thought some of the poems were quite good, but there were so many of them by so many translators from so many periods, that I couldn't really decide if I liked the poet's work or the translator's work. I'll probably try ...

Anthologies like these often get criticized for being either too Dead White Male oriented or too multiculturaly inclusive (See the criticism for the recent Rita Dove edited Penguin Anthology of 20th Century Poetry.) Library of America avoids that simply by being gigantic. Arranged by order of birthd...

A nice collection of words that could be shared during wedding ceremonies. Could be inspiring in the planning stages of a ceremony as well.

Many things I liked in here. "Futures in Lilacs" was my favorite. The next time I feel like reading poetry but don't know where to start, remind me about books I haven't read by Robert Hass.
