I am the author of eight books; two short short collections, a novella-in-shorts, a novel, a travel memoir, the first guide to writing flash fiction, and two writing work books. An artist as well, I left home to live in Europe at age twenty. For decades, I traveled alone to such places as the Peruvian Amazon, Indonesia, Central America and Australia. My travels inspired my story collections. My art, which has been exhibited worldwide, is in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum. I taught creative writing at The New School for many years and I've taught in the Writing Program at Columbia University. I've taught writing workshops in my home for twenty-two years.
