In addition to nearly 40 years in higher education, he is a former newspaper reporter and editor, nonprofit manager, board member, researcher and consultant. His books include Breaking Even: Financial Management in Human Services; The Commons: New Perspectives on Nonprofit Organization; Social Administration (co-authored). He co-edited Rural Social Work Practice, and Resolving Community Conflicts and Problems: Public Deliberation and Sustained Dialogue.
