So, I hadn’t heard much about the Magic Lessons trilogy until after I had initially read Liar—up until then, my only experience with Justine Larbalestier’s work was reading How to Ditch Your Fairy and giving up partway through because while that book had a cool idea, the concept was clearly not that...

I liked this though I found the first half rather tedious and boring. Not exactly world building but dysfunctional family dynamics. It finally livened up once Reason got to NYC. Then it was a roller coaster ride of fun and fear. I definitely want to know more about Reason and her magic schooling...

A clever set-up, interesting characters, darkness, overtones of serious issues, but also that sense of wonder. And as much as I love my faux-Edwardian and faux-Victorian settings, I love the modern, urban fantasy setting, too. Just a crazy enjoyable read, and I can't wait to read the next two.

Part 1 of the Magic or Madness trilogy. The protagonist, Reason, is an Australian teen who has grown up on the run with her mother. She has always been warned that her grandmother believes in magic and is evil. When Reason's mother goes insane, Reason is sent to live with this grandmother. A good st...

An uneven novel—parts are boring, a few tidbits are exciting or maddening (what do the feathers at the end mean? Ahh!), but mostly a pretty basic story without anything really standing out. Reason has been on the run from her witch grandmother her entire life, but is her grandmother really as danger...

Taken completely unawares by her family's magical abilities, Reason must faces an almost impossible dilemma in Larbalestier's debut novel.
