In this second short story, Celaena is sent to the Red Desert as a punishment, to attend to the Silent Assassins, where she needs to train with them and bring home a recommendation letter from their master. Celaena is used to being alone, taking care of herself and not needing anybody, but there she...

The Assassin and the Desert is a decent novella but it did not draw me in as readily as the first. I still enjoy Celaena's strength as a character but I would have liked to have seen more character growth and more compelling characters surrounding her in this installment. Sadly predictable, but still eventful. These novellas aren't perfect, but they are entertaining and get me pumped up to read Crown of Midnight.

This episode takes place a couple of months after Celaena's adventures with the Pirate Lord. She needs to be trained by the Master and get a letter of recommendation from him before returning home. When she arrives, she is befriended by a young woman named Ansel who has been with the Silent Assassin...
