Seán Kissane is Curator of Exhibitions at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. He has curated various shows bringing the work of international modern and contemporary artists to Ireland for the first time. This has included Leonora Carrington, Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera, Isaac Julien, Carlos Garaicoa, Romuald Hazoumé, Rivane Neuenschwander, and Shahzia Sikander. His major retrospective on the Surrealist Leonora Carrington travelled from Dublin to San Francisco in 2014, while his 'Analysing Cubism' exhibition travelled through Ireland in 2013. Solo exhibitions with Irish artists include Alice Maher, James McKenna, Cecil King, McDermott & McGough, Hughie O'Donoghue, Alan Phelan and Orla Barry as well as new commissions with Garrett Phelan, Alan Phelan, Alice Maher and Dennis McNulty. At IMMA he has organised exhibitions with major figures such as Eileen Gray, Lucian Freud, Georgia O'Keeffe, Louise Bourgeois, Francesco Clemente, Howard Hodgkin, Rebecca Horn and Jasper Johns. A writer and award-winning editor he has published on Carlos Garaioca, Romuald Hazoumé, Cecil King, McDermott & McGough, James McKenna, Shahzia Sikander, Marc Quinn, Isaac Julien, Orla Barry, Fiona Mulholland, Lu Chungsheng, Dorothy Cross, Sam Dargan, Suzy O'Mullane, Anita Groener, Michael Kane and contemporary Chinese art. He has edited a number of important monographs including books on Lucian Freud, Georgia O'Keeffe, Barry Flanagan, and The White Stag Group. He was co-editor of Boulevard Magenta, IMMA's biannual journal of the arts and letters. He has lectured widely including at the University of Ulster, the National Gallery of Ireland and the Peggy Guggenheim Foundation. He is a contributor to Circa and Contexts magazines as well as the Shanghai Art Museum Review. He has served as a judge and selector on panels including the Oriel Mostyn Open and the Central Bank of Ireland.
