While the setting is not one to which I would typically be drawn – a Depression-era North Carolina lumber camp – Ron Rash’s characters, boldly drawn and irresistibly ruthless, are what make Serena truly worth reading. It begins when the title character, Serena, arrives in Waynesville, North Carolin...

Serena is a man killer. Literally. She eats babies and cute puppies for lunch....and has no redeeming qualities as a character. Normally, that would make me put down a book in a heartbeat because I don't like my characters to act without a conscience. Instead I'm in love with anti-heroes-- the ki...

This book is very well written. Serena is a chilling character and I can't wait to see Jennifer Lawrence play her on the big screen.

I was somewhat prepared for this book having read a few short stories by Ron Rash. Yet, I was still overwhelmed. What a stunning work! Shockingly heartless and greedy characters beyond your imaginings set against lush and beautiful descriptions of North Carolina timber country during the the Ameri...

I am left in awe, completely lost for words. This book is a weird mixture of deep fascination and violent disgust. I cannot really decide whether I want to throw it at the wall or just start to read it all over again.
