I read this for the Fear Street square. The thing about this book is while it is very much stock urban fantasy and sometimes a bit too heavy on dialogue, the world building and characters are great. We also do not have the heroine as the only girl who can do anything.
Let's start off with the good. This had a very unique premise. A unique premise usually leads to a high rating in-and-of itself BUT unfortunately, the execution was subpar at best. I have come to terms with the fact that I will be the villain here and speak ill of the dead. I'm harsh mainly due to a...
The lead has to solve a mystery that has something to do with her culture and family. It's not too heavy on the teen drama and has a strong female lead. YA Fantasy/PNR lovers should definitely check this out.
Sometimes I read a book and find myself realizing, "This was not made for me." And that is 100% okay! I feel the same way about TV shows and movies. I'm glad that there are things being made that do not appeal to me, but speak to others. Honestly, the world needs a lot more of that. So with that in ...
Initial reaction: One of my favorite reads this year so far. I loved this book so much. The MC had a strong voice and the overarching storyline was imaginative and exciting. I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel.Full review:I'll admit I saw this book on the shelf at my library and was complet...
Shadowshaper was a book that I requested based off a friend's review. I'm very glad I requested it.It's a gorgeous, fast-paced, vibrant book that celebrates life, music, and culture with quick wit, rich imagery, and tons of imagination.Full review later.
Shadowshaper by Daniel José Older Shadowshaper brings richer cadences to a familiar tune. Many aspects are familiar to readers of urban fantasy and young adult: a secret world of magic, a naive heroine who discovers her own unique powers, and burgeoning romance. However, Older describes a fuller, ...
Lovely. Just lovely. I've read a lot of positive reviews about this, and all the good things are true. So many things to like about this one. My favorite thing is probably how the form of magic is so ill suited to weaponization. So while our heroine does go through a combat training section and...
I absolutely loved Shadowshaper–I had been hearing great things about it for months before it came out, and they were all deserved. Sierra’s relationship to her art, to her family and its secrets, to her culture and its joys and sorrows were all wonderful. And Older weaves in so many current issues,...
This is one hell of a series starter. Sierra discovers a family heritage she didn't know she had, and along with a motley crew of friends and relatives, explores a new world of magic and spirits. Oh how simple that plot can be boiled down to, but this is a really good book, and the plot itself...
