I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. When tragedy befalls a family, blame and grief widen the cracks and isolate the remaining members. A mother who misses her culture, a father who is a workaholic...

I had read half the book and when my American teacher left, so I was glad I didn't have to finish it. Seriously boring, but she was a nice person, so I tried it for her. Phew.

Not bad, but not that great either. While the author had all the right ingredients for her dish, I just felt like the final product was a bit lacking. As usual, I was leery of this one because it's getting so much talk lately...but it was for a group read so I picked up a copy. But, it surprised me. I was instantly hooked to the story, with the birth of Usha/Asha and the miscarriage that led to her adoption. I felt for both women, the struggles...

While the synopsis states that the story is about the bond of motherhood, Secret Daughter is also a captivating look at life in India. In fact, of the two mothers, Kavita is the one who is the most sympathetic and leads the most intriguing lifestyle, if only because she leads a harsh life that is ex...
